OVERVIEW

What is ProFriction?

ProFriction is an early-stage startup company that aims to encourage and promote healthier lifestyles by introducing friendly fitness competition between teams. The co-founders tasked me to design their mobile application from the ground-up.

Project Goal

Our goal was to design the app's wireframes, implement into code, and establish the company’s branding presence to release beta by the end of August 2024. This product caters to individuals seeking a fun workout experience, regardless of their skill level. Below is the general timeline where I worked on each phase of the project.

👔 Meet the Stakeholders

Co-founders Jackie Chan and Alex Charles scouted me to work as their UI/UX Designer. My project entails iterating and expanding over their original vision to create a more professional, modern brand identity and a higher quality of user experience. I worked closely with the co-founders in bi-weekly meetings, with Alex operating as the software engineer and Jackie as our product manager.

DESIGN PROCESS

📚 Storybuilding

In order to further flesh out all of the past and new ideas that the co-founders had for their vision, I prompted to create a FigJam of all the features they wanted to include, as well as the user flow for each segment.

Feature Ideation & User Flow

After narrowing down our ideas, we decided to include:

(1) competition challenges between teams,

(2) personal and team workout metrics,

(3) free and premium workout programs, and

(4) team activity social feed.

We believed that all these features would fulfill the product’s overall mission: to introduce friendly fitness competition between teams and promote a healthier lifestyle for all. Having all our ideas fleshed out, we began designing wireframes and testing out several different colors and styles for the product's brand. Though we first started out with a light mode, we decided that a dark mode would best suit the product in terms of brand and aesthetics.

👩🏻‍🔬 User Testing

After finishing up lo-fidelity iterations, we gathered 5 users to walk through our application.

Increased Onboarding

With our initial onboarding wireframes, we found that users still experienced confusion and lacked thorough understanding of the app's objective. We replaced the symbolic images and vague descriptions with specific screenshots and instructions, as well as added guiding arrows in the first steps of utilizing the app.

We also added a "Good Work!" popup when users submit a workout. This creates immediate positive feedback that serves as a visual reward, and boosts user motivation.

Instant Gratification

We saw opportunity for improvement in the motivational components of the application. To address this, we introduced a swipe-to-mark-done feature within the workout interface. This is an easy, yet gratifying action that increases user satisfaction

Workout Tags

An additional feature we implemented was workout tags, separated by muscle groups. These tags would serve to create clear organization, make it much more convenient for users to target the muscle groups they want, and easily optimize their invididual workout goals.

RESULTS & TAKEAWAYS

As the designs and code for the mobile application have finished up, Jackie and Alex are working with contractors to establish their business and work on legalities. The goal is to get the beta of Trybe out by the end of August 2024, and Version 1 into the App Store by the end of December 2024. At the moment, the competition feature is still being further fleshed out by the co-founders and would be released as an update later after the initial beta.

🎨 Full Creative Freedom

As the primary UI/UX designer, I was able to experiment and take my time with minute details as much as I wanted. Because of this, I was able to refine my technical skills in Figma in terms of familiarity and iterating over designs until I was satisfied with the results.

🌟 Exposure Beyond UX

This experience with ProFriction exceeded my expectations. I was able to work very closely with the co-founders, and witness much of the work behind the scenes for building an early-stage startup. I wholly believe that this exposure helped me grow to be a more versatile and well-rounded designer.
